Warwick New York

A storied hotel in a stellar Midtown location that has attracted legends like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Madonna. While the property boasts understated luxury and ultra-quiet guest rooms, it’s the staff’s friendly demeanor that sets it apart, giving patrons reason to return time and time again.

This slice of Midtown assumes a big city feel without the congestion of neighbouring Times Square. In an ideal location for travellers who prefer easy access to Central Park (it’s a five-minute walk north on Sixth Avenue), the hotel is also minutes from the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center and the array of luxury shops that line Fifth Avenue. Within five blocks, six subways make getting around town a breeze, and you’ll have even more trains at Columbus Circle, which is about seven minutes away.

Style & character

Old New York mingled with a dose of Tinseltown glam seeps from the pores of Warwick New York. Remnants of the past still linger in the interior detailing, and no-one can overlook the fabled past of the Emory Roth structure. Famed businessman and publisher William Randolph Hearst built the high-rise with the thought that his mistress, Marion Davies, and his high-powered Hollywood colleagues would stay there when they were in town. Nearly a hundred years later, the Warwick still thrives.

Panelled walls, marble flooring and pilasters, and traditional furnishings complete the sizable reception and lobby space. March up to the second level, and you’ll encounter photos of the hotel’s most notable guests on the walls of fame. Expect to see pictures of Jane Russell, James Dean, and Cary Grant, who lived in the hotel for 12 years, as well as other legendary film stars.

Service & facilities

Personalised service is one of this hotel’s strengths, so you’ll be welcomed from the get-go. Nothing is too much trouble, and the team is happy to honour special requests.

A bar, two restaurants – one for breakfast and one for lunch and dinner – and a business centre are adjacent to the lobby. From the reception area, stairs lead to meeting spaces and additional lounge seating on the second floor. Same-day valet dry cleaning, 24-hour room service, and valet parking are nice perks. A third-floor fitness centre sports a stairmaster, bikes, treadmills, and free weights.

Soothing, neutral colours adorn most guest rooms, which start in the 250-square foot range, but spacious suites take on more striking tones including black and white with gold and green accents. The hotel dates to 1926, so even the most modest rooms provide plenty of wiggle room for couples or friends. Expect amenities such as large desks for workspace, minibars, iron and ironing boards, and radios with iPod docking stations. Some suites offer private terraces with Manhattan views.

Food & drink

Randolph’s is a timeless New York tavern with a loungey feel, and one in which loads of regulars populate the bar on any given night. The all-day menu is a mix of casual eats like the chopped cobb salad and fried calamari, as well as more classic entrees such as a well-cooked New York strip with fries and a healthy grilled chicken paillard. Wines are upscale but interesting – like a Loire Valley Chardonnay from La Petite Perrier and the Virginia Dare Russian River Pinot Noir –  rather than the usual pours you’ll find in some Midtown establishments.

For breakfast, Murals on 54 puts out an extensive buffet that’s fit for a king. Eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, pastries, bread, among other delectables, provide a diverse selection to start the day. A la carte choices don’t disappoint. Instead of going with all-you-can-eat, opt for a fluffy omelet with roasted potatoes or an order of brioche French toast. While you’re in Murals on 54, take notice of the bespoke artwork – the 1937 pieces by American illustrator Dean Cornwall were restored after the restaurant’s renovation in 2004.
